Jember – The Master of Dryland Agriculture (MPLK) Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, held a Widyakarya (Working with Teachers) activity from May 17–20, 2026, in Jember Regency, East Java. The program was attended by supervising lecturers and students of the Master of Dryland Agriculture Program as part of a field-based learning process aimed at enhancing students' insight, skills, and understanding of technological developments and agricultural innovation in Indonesia.
The Widyakarya included visits to several strategic institutions, including the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Center (PUSLITKOKA), PT East West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo), the University of Jember's Agrotechnology Academic Implementation Unit (UPA), and the Jember State Polytechnic (Polije). This activity was designed to provide students with real-world experience in understanding the application of agricultural science, land resource management, cultivation technology, seed development, and the industry-based vocational education system.
During the visit to PUSLITKOKA Jember, participants received materials on sustainable coffee and cocoa cultivation, superior variety selection, moisture conservation technology, post-harvest management, and strategies for improving the quality of national plantation commodities. In addition, students gained insight into the challenges of developing coffee and cocoa commodities in the face of climate change and the importance of implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in supporting the productivity and sustainability of farming businesses.
The activity continued with a visit to PT East West Seed Indonesia (Ewindo), one of Indonesia's leading seed companies. Students also had the opportunity to learn about seed quality standards applied by the industry to produce high-quality and competitive agricultural products.
Next, the group visited the UPA Agroteknologi (Agrotechnology) at the University of Jember to learn about the management of an academic unit that integrates education, research, entrepreneurship, and community service. Various facilities, such as greenhouses, hydroponics, compost processing, ornamental plant cultivation, and smart farming development, were part of the learning experience.
The final visit took place at the Jember State Polytechnic (Polije). During this visit, participants learned about the implementation of the Teaching Factory (TEFA) concept, Project-Based Learning (PBL), smart agriculture, precision farming, and various forms of collaboration between universities and industry. In addition to introducing modern agricultural technology, this activity also opens up opportunities for collaboration in research, scientific publications, student exchanges, and the development of tropical agricultural innovations.
Through this Widyakarya activity, students are expected to improve their understanding of agricultural technology implementation in the field, strengthen their analytical skills in addressing various dryland agricultural issues, and build academic networks with various research institutions, industries, and universities. This activity also serves as one of the efforts of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University, to support the development of superior, adaptive human resources capable of meeting the challenges of sustainable agricultural development in the future.
